THE WINTER SHOW.

To-morrow sees the opening of the fifth annual winter show at New Plymouth of t'lie Taranaki Agricultural Society. Five years ago, despite the bitter wail of the 'llOll-progvcssives, the New Plymouth. Winter Show was launched by an attenuated but enthusiastic and selfsacrificing committee. Rain and hail and wind greeted the birth of the new fixture for farmers, but, like the Eskimo child who, it is alleged, is rubbed with snow in order that lie may become inured to the cold, the Winter Show developed a lusty youth, and has gone 'on growing. This year will esee by far the biggest of the series, and the wide scope of the exhibits in all classes and sections proves that the sliow is amply fulfilling its useful purpose. The spirit of emulation engendered among the farmers and others can have but one result, and that the enrichment of the primary producers, who will benefit more and more from the greater attention which is being given 011 all sides to intensive farming and the growth of sustaining winter fodder for stock. The education does not end with the work 011 the land itself, for the comparison with the results of the labors of others, chats with the experts in the various divisions of farm .activity, and investigation and examination of the fine exhibit of the State Agricultural Department, together with Lhc inspection of the latest in dairy machinery. make a visit to the show also most instructive. The sliow ba.s an added value in supplying a well-varied holiday at a time of the year when it i; 'much wanted. Town and country people alike will find much to entertain and much to amuse within the four walls of this cosmopolitan exhibition of the skill and industry of the province, and there is bound to be a very large attendance on all four days of the sliow. The Agricultural Society must be congratulated 011 the excellent work done so far, and wc trust that this year the

weather-god will be more propitious than in Hi., past.
