.RIO PROSPECTS FOR FROZEN MEAT, | By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, June 4. The Sydney Morning Herald, in a leader on the expansion of German shipping interests in the Pacific, says: "But for tne protective barrier there would be an enormous market in Germany for our meat, wheat and wool. It is difficult to believe that in face of present-day conditions the tariff can be maintained much longer. A sign of the times is that the Conservatives, representing the landed classes, are willing to abandon the veto on the importation of primary products in the interest of the Australasian steamship services. This is undoubtedly a quid pro quo for the withdrawal of the subsidy. It will be a generous compensation, for if the Customs prohibition is once removed the activities of German shipping will be enormously increased."
