FIRE BRIGADE BALL.

Should at any time a fatality occur at a firo in New Plymouth owing to the lack of proper flre-figliting facilities, there would be a tremendous lvowl of criticism from many people who do not evince any very practical interest in the brigade, but the blame could be laid at the door, not only of those ill immediate control of the brigade's affairs 'but oil every citizen who, having the opportunity, refuses to contribute (his mito towards the upkeep of the brigade. Thero is 110 branch of the public utility service, perhaps, more deserving of recognition than the Fire Brigade, for tlieir vrork entails the risk of life and limb, yet brings no reward save that of "something attempted, something done." New Plymouth has an excellent brigade, w'hosc members include many men of long and faithful service. Not overburdened with funds at any time, the brigade benefits once a year from a big effort put forward by a committee of patriotic ladies who stage the children's plain and fancy dress ball. Every parent knows that this function takes place on Wednesday, tlio King's Birthday, and all Ohe little folka are eagerly looking forward to it. Wo ask, on behalf of the brigade and the organisers of the ball, that the public will extend their most liberal patronage, if only for the reason that in helping the brigade they are helping themselves. Apart from this, tflie ball is one of the most delightful spectacular events of the year.
