Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui Jot'key Club's winter meeting opened to-day in shocking weather. Heavy rain fell till noon. During the nfternoon a cold, stinging bliz- ! zard swept the ground. The going was good under the circumstances.

The racing opened with the Borough Handicap, for which Postillion was a pronounced favorite. A stramjlin<r start saw Sanguinary, The Great Mogul and Postillion in front. The favorite caught Sanguinary at the distance, and won easily.

Exotic and Waterworks had most supporters for the Hack Steeple. Exotic led at the end of a mile, but was challenged at the last hurdle by Silver Monarch, t!ho latter beating the Taranaki horse for first place in the.ran home.

The Wanganui Steeple was merely a i procession, Jackman winning practically all the way. The bracketed pair, Glenmore and Kauroa, had most supporters, hut Jackman and Bercola were well backed. Sir Lethe led for half a mile, then Jackman gained a big break. ..Bercola made a great attempt to reduce the gap, but Jackman won by about forty yards, Riro Atu a fair third. Then came The Spaniard, Sportsman and Glenmore.

' Punters went strongly for Kurnalpi, Manawakaha and Sam Pan in ttie HackHurdles. Parewanui led aid the way, and won nicely from Sweet Breeze! Manawakalia jumped well, but tired at the finish. ~.

Darby Paul, wlio met with a mishap recently, could not start in tJle -Century Hurdles. Hmia, Player and Cornelian were evenly backed. Huia and Goodwin Park led for a mile and three-quarters. Player then displaced Huia, and Cornelian came fast. Player finished well, beating Goodwin Park Jby a length, Cornelian a close third.

All started in the Connolly Handicap, Bertrada, First Consul and Red Bsok being favorites. Cheddar and Settlor led past tilie stand. Along the back Cheddar. First Consul and Leonta were prominent, the trio turning for home together. Leonta looked a winner at the distance, but Red Book finished jfast and won on Hie post by a head. Maniavoa came with a rattle, and was a close third, just in front of Goldsize.- ' .

The concluding event, the Purua Handicap, saw money rolling in for "rincess Aloutoa, Master Lupin, Styrax and Square Deal. The first to 'find their feet were Master Lupin and Princess Moutoa. The forme;- led along the back and lasted long enough to defeat Square Deal and Styrax in a good finish. Falls were frequent during the dav. Tewhetu and Morvhiko came down in the Wanganui Steeple, Waldemar in the Hack Hurdles, and Huia and Master Lupin at the last fence in the Century Hurdles.

Marchant, the rider of Iluia, hart a collarbone broken, but the others escaped injury.
