COAL-MINING CONDITIONS.
SINGLE SHIFTS SUGGESTED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 21, 8.15 p.m. Sydney, May 21.
The Northern Miners' Wages Board in an award has refused the miners' demand for increased rates for the afternoon shift at the Maitland collieries. The award has a currency of three years, and is generally against the men. Judge Edmundß, in delivering it, said the working hours of coal-miners might reasonably bo limited to one shift, with advantage to the whole community, provided that the supply to meet the public demands could be maintained by one shift.
The. Government has appointed a commission to enquire into the abolition of the third shift
