COURSING.

I ; «. „ j TARANAKIPLUMPTON MEETING. ' A SHORTAGE OF HARKS. | The Taranaki Huwpton Coursing Club held their inaugural meeting yesterday u<t Glenavon, Wuiwakaiho, and what had every indication of being a most successful gathering was. practically spoilt through circumstances entirely beyond the committee's control. For the Maiden Stakes dogs from all parts of Taranaki had entered. Complete arrangements had been made for the meeting, including the obtaining of a liberal supply of hares, which had been obtained a month ago from the South Island. Up till a week ago these were in good condition, but the bad weather since caused them to develop eye and hip disease, and, as a result, kills were very numerous, so numerous, in fact, that the supply of hares ran out before the second round was completed, and the meeting iiiad reluctant];,- to be abandoned. Some of the hares gave excellent runs, an indication of the sport tliat would have resulted had the hares all been in good nick. The course between Monty and Liudy proved one of the be&t ever witnessed in Taranaki. It lasted for over live minutes, the hare eventually being killed after numerous twists and turns, when almost in safety. It was a very close contest, and it was only lis close work that gave .Monty the verdict. Hr. R. Gardiner, as slip" per, got the dogs away well. 'Mr. J. Jenkinson, as judge, gave his decisions promptly nnd correctly, and only on one occasion was his verdict even As secretary, too, he had attended to every detail, and everything worked Bjnoothlv. Whilst he was engaged in his judicial capacity,. Mr. A. James acted as assistant. I

•There was a reiy good attendance throughout the day.' At the conclusion. Mr. J. 0.
