STRATFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

At the monthly meeting of the School Committee on .Tuesday, there were present: Messrs 6. Smart (in the chair), ( B. W. Hancock, T. Lawson, E. Jackson, - W. McDonald, H. Sanderson and F. A. Cramer. Mr. P. Skoglund (chairman) was absent, owing to having to attend another meeting. HEADMASTER'S REPORT. | The headmaster reported: The ground between the infant and main schools is very, rough. The old, broken stones have worn their way to the surface, and several minor accidents have ocurred there during the last fortnight. I hope the part I refer to will be put in repair during the holidaye. Inspector Whetter visited the school last week and made full enquiry into the various alterations to the infant room asked for by your committee at its last meeting. The inspector saw th« necessity for flooring and warming the main hall and stated that Mr. Moore, the Board's foreman I of works, would visit the school and j make a detailed report and recommend- ; ation. Last Christmas your committee decided that for the present and future years the prizes to be given to tibo higher standards were to be properly bound books, stamped with the school's crest and motto. It is time now that arrangements were made to secure for December next. I suggest that you appoint a small eub- [ commitcce to deal with the matter. The inclement weather we have had since ■the beginning of May has lessened our average attendance considerably, and the current quarter's average up to date is only 519. Messrs Skoglund, Smart and McMillan were appointed to go into tihe question of having prizes bound.

| It was decided to rake off the big stones between the infant and main schools and spread six loads of gravel at tlie place. It was also decided to make a manhole. GENERAL. Messrs McDonald and Cramer were appointed the Yisiting committee for the ensuing two months. Mr. May's tender was accepted for the work of putting a ventilator on the greenhouse. Mr, Chard's tender for firewood was accepted. It was decided that repairs to the batih be not gene on with until the next swimming season.

The secretary of the Board notified that the holidays for the year would be: Winter, May 29 to June 8; spring, August 21 to 31; summer, December 18 to February 1, 1915. The School Committees' Association notified that a conference of committeemen with the Education Board would -be held in New Plymouth during Winter Show week.—Messrs Skoglund and Smart were appointed 1 delegates to represent Stratford.

Mr. Frank Mackay wrote: "Kindly convey to your committee my sincere thanks for 'the support offered me at tlie recent election of a member for the East Ward of the Education iso:n\i, and I trust at some future date to again receive your support."

OVER THE BRIDGE. To Hie .Editor, Sir.—-I cannot but "think that your reporter lias gone out of his way in his report of our meeting last Thursday evening. Our meeting was a meeting of ratepayers in a particular part of "the borough. and naturally the tone of 1 the meet ing was one of self-intorest and self-de-fence. One speaker, possibly smarting undw a sense of injustice, was perhaps a little wild in his remarks, but his worship the Mayor certainly never came into t-ho discussion at all except in being the one to whom the petition of two resolutions was to b® addressed. Out meeting was a quasi private meeting, and although reporters vreve. permitted to be present in oTder that those unable to be present might be made aware of what woe being done "we certainly expected courtesy from our guests.—j am, etc., h. wrr^ox, Chairman.
