THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, May 18. There are 232 entries for the amateur championship. It is brilliant weather and the course is very fast. The greens have been well watered and are easy. Horeshoff (America) beat St. John by 4 up and 3. Over a thousand followed l Hilton's and Palmer's /rounds. The latter is tho Irish champion and is aged fiftysix, Travers' outward journey cost 44 and both, turned square. Tra vers, was 2 up at the 12th hole and all square at the lflth. Travors played poor golf and was often bunkered. A crowd followed Oiumet, who played good steady golf, his approaches being beautifully judged. In the first round Hilton (1013 champion) beat Boyd, 8 up and 7 to play; Robert Harris boat Croome, 7 and 5; Palmer beat Travel's, 2 up; Hon. Michael Scott beat Brown, 3 and 2; Chanwich beat Knapp (America), 5 and ,4; Read beat Lassen (1008 champion), 4 and 2; Hale (America) beat Whigham, 5 and 3; Barker beat Terry (Australia) 0 and 5; Evans (America) beat Cranston, 5 and 4; Whit ton bent Stewart, 7 and 5; J. Murray beat Insloe (America), 2 up; Apperlcy (Australia) beat Weaver, 3 and 2; Gordon Lockhart beat Castle, 2 and 1; Gillies (New Zealand) beat Yeomans, 8 and 7; J. Graham beat Charles, 5 and 4; Ouimet" beat MucGregor (Manila), 7 and 8.
