At the place where the unfortunate boy WebborK met 'his death on the Opunuke r<'Wl on Monday there is a dip in the road and a bank at the Ride, hence the reason that the wire could be reached. The bo.y must have climbed the bank to reach the wire which had ceino adrift from the pole.. The affair lias created a universal feeling of sympathy. It is the first fatality that has occurred on the Electrical Company's system. An inquest will be held to-day.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday• evening, there being present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. VY. P. Kirk wood). Crs. King, Makers, Thompson, Fredrie, Richards and Morieos. THE ESTIMATES. The estimates for the current year were submitted and discussed in committee. On resuming, the estimates were adopted. TKEE-PLAXTING. The Beautifying Society wrote offering to take charge of the tree-planting operations in Broadway North, and it was decided to accept the offer. ABATTOIR COTTAGE. It was decided that the work required at the abattoir cottage be left in the hands of the Abattoir Committee, to take Etteh action as they deemed advisable. COMMITTEES. It was decided that Crs. Thompson and Fredrie be appointed to the Fire Brigade Committee. Cr. Fredrie was added to the special committee appointed to confer with the Electrical Supply Co. as to the taking over of the company's plant. VOTE OF SYMPATHY. On the motion of Cr. King, seconded by Cr. Thompson, a vote of sympathy with Or. Ardcn in his sudden illness was unanimously passed, together with the ' sincere wishes of the Council for a speedy restoration to health. I BATES. His Worship the Mayor gave notice to move at the next ordinary meeting of tilie Council that the following rates be struck: —General rate, 3d; special rates, 7-Bd, 5-lfid, 1-Sd, Mid; water Tate, Gd. The rates are on the unimproved value. STRATFORD CO-OPERATIVE BUILDING SOCIETY. ANNUAL MEETING.
Tin' annual meeting of shareholders in tlie above Society was held »[ the liorough Council Clumlicre, Stmiford. on Monday evening, Mr. N. J. King, c'bairman of directors, presiding. The report and balance-sheet were taken «s read, and, after some complimentary remarks on the management and success of the. Society'* operations, were adopted. The three retiring directors, Messrs King, Brayshaw and G. Smart, were reelected unopposed. Mr. T. H. Ponn was reappointed auditor. An honorarium of £lO 10s was voted to the chairman, whose serrices were eulogised. A bonus of £;> was voted to the secretary, Mr. A. Coleman. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman and directors for their past services. In acknowledging the compliment, the chairman pointed out that witthin eighteen months all the shareholders in the first group will have received the appropriations to which they are respectively entitled.
