SENTENCED FOR SEDITION.
RE-TRIAL OF VOL'Nil. By Telegraph— Association. Wellington, Yesterday. The s:cond trial of WiHia.ui Thomas Young on the second charge of sedition was commenced at the Supreme Court to-day. Counsel for the defence rai-ed the point that Young, having been already convicted of the' crime with which he was now charged, was not entitled to b.' tried by the court at all. The previous charge was one of inviting, and this was one of sedition, but both arose out of l-o same speech. The evidence of the Magistrate who .sentenced Young to three months' imprisonment for in'cilement was put in. Counsel proceeded to arge.e that the court had no power to try accused, and contended I hat the decision, of the Court of Appeal in Holland's ease dkl not apply. .Mr. Justice Husking overruled the plea, and the retrial is proceeding. The jury returned a verdict of guilty in the ease in which William Thomas Young was charged with making seditious speeches at tne Resin Reserve on October ill. during the strike. The jury added a recommendation to mercy, and sentence was deferred perilling the decision of the Appeal Coil/'! o:i the plea of the previous convictions raised by Mr W'ill'.ii'd, who contended that the charge of inciting on which Young had already been pun'islicd was based on the ■sim evidence as the present charge of "edition.
