MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
SUNDRY OFFENCES. Mr. A. Crookc, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when a number of miscellaneous olVcnccs, were dealt with. CRUELTY TO A HORSE. Tile New Plymouth S.P.C.A. (Mr. Billing) proceeded against J. Brewer, a-n elderly man, for cruelty to a horse, it being alleged that he had driven the animal while it was suffering from a biid girth gall. Ralph Collins, inspector to the Society, | stated that the gall was six inches long land about three inches wide. It had i broken, and was bleeding. The trace '. was wrapped with rag, but the horse was evidently in pain, and, as he put it, was | '"evidently an old slave, (it to work as I long as it could be. put between the i shafts." j Defendant said that it was not by his de-ire. nor with his knowledge that the horse, was worked while in -:>iit-li a condition. An employee of his had b.'cn working the horse, but defendant would take the responsibility, as he did not want the man to waste the time necessary to come to Court. I Mr. Hilling confirmed this, saying that his original instruction* were, to prosejcute thi! employee, but defendant had 'taken the responsibility on himself. Defendant was convicted and fined £1 and costs 17s (Jd. COUNTY BY-LAWS. For lii-oaches of the 'by-laws of the Taranaki County Council (Mr. E. 11. William Lacey, 'Arthur Howe, and John Cliard, for driving unlighted vehicles after dark, each 7s Gd and costs 17s Od. UOROUUi. BY-LAWS. Breaches of the by-laws of t.li? Borough (Air. ]t. Tippins, Inspector), were dealt with as follows: Oliver 'William Sole, of the firm oi' Sole Bros., New Plymouth, pleaded guilty to having failed to provide the manure rcceptable required by the bylaws on premises where lie kept "a horse. He had now provided a receptacle of the required type. He was fined 10s and exists 7s. Norman Wells, for cycling after dark without a light, was fined 5s and costs ,7s. DRUNKENNESS.
Henry Fynes Calloghan, who appeared to answer a charge 'of drunkenness, preferred by Detective-Seret. Buddarn, was, on the application of the detective, remanded for a week for meui-a! treatment. A first offending inebriate wa.s convicted and discharged.
