ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH ANNIVERSARY SOCIAL. At the Foresters' Hall on Wednesday night, the annual aocial of the Pres'byI terian Church was well attended, and ,tho proceedings were most enjoyable, from the opening item to the National Anthem. The Rev. Mr Howes, of Manaia, gave an address, and sang "The Sign of the Cross." Misses Maekey and Irivine sang a duet ||The Sea of Glass"), and Miss Maekey also sang "Sunshine and Rain." Mr Hawkins sang "Maid ot Athens," and displayed his versatility as an elocutionist in "Nail your Colors to the Mast" and "Yacob Strauss." Mr Thompson sang "I was a Pale Young Curate Then," and Mr Douglas sang "Star of Bethlehem." of the local Salvation Army, gave a recitation, and Mr Ansford's humorous recitations and songs were greatly appreciated. Rev. Paatison was especially happy in his chairman's remarks. He was pleased to see the fine social spirit ,in the tongrcgation as exemplified by the* meet-, ing-, and urged the necessity for more zeal for the church. He felt no doubt | that the friends of the church would come forward in the coming year to clear off the debt. He thanked the ladies for their work in arranging the musical portion of the programme and in providing a splendid supper. JERSEY BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF STRATFORD BRANCH. A meeting of the Stratford branch of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders Association was held in the secretary's office on Tuesday, there being present: Messrs J. T. Belcher, J. D. Healy, D. Watkin, E. J. Kirkwood W. Saywell. W. V. Harkneas, J. Shotter, W. Vickers, and the secretary. DELEGATEa The chairman reported that the meeting had been called for the purpose of electing two delegates to the New Zealand Council, and to formulate remits. Messrs A. H. Halconibe, E. J. Kirkwood and D. Watkin will be nuuiimlc.l for the two positions vacant on the council. The secretary will write Hiwera and New Plymouth branches and tell them who have been nominated and ask for their support. Also that he write t« all members of the Stratford ; branch. The following remits were agreed to: —That it be a recommendation to the council that they increase the jridgos' list toy at least, twenty names,; that the council urge upon the Board of Agriculture to bring under the notice of the Government the desirability of placing the Jersey breed on the same footing as the other breeds at the Experimental Farms; that the council be written to asking them, to put off the time of commencing the annual meeting to 1.30 p.m. instead <of 11 a.m., so that northern members can attend the meeting in two days; that the .remita toe leflt to Messrs D. Watkin, E. J. Kirkwood, and W. V. Harkness. > OENEUAL. It was decided to procure volumes 8, 9, W and 11 of the Herd Boob, A vote of thanks waa accorded to the retiring secretary, Mr. W. B. FeoTOn.

The local Beautifying Society has <leoided to hold a carnival queen contest in September, and a. committee ha-s been appointed to arrange details, At Whangamomona on Tuesday the county ratepayers in "the central riding approved of the striking of a "bridge rate in the riding, and also the mctailing of the 'Olmra road in the Tiding. There were very few votes against the proposals. At the court yesterday morning a first-offending drunkard was convicted and discharged, Mr C. TJ. Sole, J.P., being on tlie bench.
