ENCROACHMENT OF THE SEA
HOKITIKA STILL IN DANGER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hokitika, Tuesday. The condition of affairs on the seafront continues very serious. During the last few days the spring tides have made a savage attack on the protection works, which have been badly shattered. Enormous wayes are battering close inshore.
The main attack at present is at the rear of Johnstone's warehouse, and there to-day the protective works erected by the owners gave way, and the sea is, eating in behind. Property-' holders in the affected area are removing their household goods, in view of a further incursion to-night. The work of erecting groynes is proceeding in very leisurely . fashion, in view of the serious position, and much public concern is expressed. Large crowds arc watching the waves dashing in and throwing spray many feet into the air.
