DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

HURWORTH. ' A social was held in the Carrington school on Friday evening, under the auspices of the School Oommittec, and as a large number of Frankley road people were present, a jollv time was spent.

Tile 'Cross Road Coons," a nigger minsitrel troupe, combining talent from the two roads, are hard at it practising, to produce a monster show at the end of the mouth.

The Carrington-Mangorci cross-road is in an impassible state just at present. It is a pity the road wasi not metalled j immediately it was formed. It is now a bog hole and will be for the next six I months.

A local farmer in a small way hero has been exceedingly unfortunate, losing five head of cattle within a few hours of each other owing to their eating a poisonous plant in his garden. One of the beasts was a valuable bull, for which he only recontly refused a good offer. Such is fate.

The recent heavy rain did a deal of damago to the roads, etc., one culvert on the Carringtom road being washed away, and many others were damaged in various ways.

Considering the "broken weather, the milk supply at the creamery is keeping up well, being easily ahead of last year's figures at this time. Mrs. Ritchie has returned to Hurworth after an enjoyable holiday to Napier and Wellington. _ Mrs. Gilbert has been spending a short time with her son in Christchurch f

Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert are entertaining their friends at a social evening on Tuesday, the 19th inst., the occasion, I understand, being the celebration of the coming of age of their second son. Our new schoolteacher, Mr. Turner, appears to be getting the kiddies well in hand and according to present indications fihould secure good result* at the examinations.

Mr. Blanchett, of the upper part of the road, has invested in a motor car. Speakinir of cars and their drivers, I ! hope they have themselves and their ' cars well insured, for there will be some j brilliant smash-ups if they do not give J more warning when negotiating corners j at high speed. You may expect a report of this any time.

During the evening Mr. W. Rumball, chairman of the School Committee, presented the prizes, each child receiving a prize, and there were live special prizes given to Uie children' who had novar missed a day. A special word of praise is due to Miss CaSfiie, the schoolmistress, for the thorough way in which the children had been taught their different recitations, etc. After the concert the daintiest of dainty suppers, provided by the ladies of the district, was handed round, afte'.' which the lloor was cleared for dancing. The music for the dance was supplied by Ducker's orchestra, extras being played by Messrs. Smith, N. Tai and F. Burgess. Mr A. Magon, as M.C.. was a great success, and kept things moving merrily till the small hours of the morning .

TARIKI. Messrs Wheeler and J. Brown, who acted as judges for the Tariki Horticultural Society's field crops competitions ,havc announced the following results :

For best two acres of swede turnips (10 entries): Mr. J. Mucker (Surrey road). Ist; Mr. E. Jones, Tariki, 2nd; Mr. W. W. Stephenson, h.e. Carrots, best y 4 acre: Mr. D. S. Swanson, Ist; Mrs. Long, 2nd.

Mangels: Mr. D. fc'watison, Ist; a very fine crop of Yellow OioDcs. Owing no doubt to the success of the Tariki cheese at the Islington dairy show and prominence at many of the Dominion shows in the past, the directors report a keen demand in, the local markets. Substantial <7rdcrs have been received from Wangiunii and Xcw Plymouth merchants at a very satisfactory price, and there is every inducement for .shareholders to keep up the supply of milk as long as possible. A number of inquiries are being made for shaven and there is strong evidence that there will be a large number of new suppliers next season.

Mr. and Mrs. D. Jones are away on an extended tour in the northern pro-

vinces. Mr. C. E. Young is at Dannevirkc. and reports good sport amongst the pheasants. Mr. J. Hucker, who has been indisposed, i.~ now completely recovered. Miss 0.
