CHANCELLOR REPLIES TO CRITICISM. WARDING OFF A SOCIAL REVOLUTION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 12, 10.50 p.m. London, May 12.
I In the Budget debate, Mr Lloyd George, replying to criticism, announced a reduction of twopence on unearned incomes under £SOO. He twitted the Opposition with blaming him for carrying out Disraeli's maxim, uttered in 1872, that "the first duty of a Minister was to look after the people's health." The Chancellor of the Exchequer added: "The rich and opulent ought to be glad to pay income and super taxes, if only as a cheap price to buy off a social revolution."
