The Mexican mediators' conference las been fixed to take place at Niagara Balls on the 18th. A comprehensive lettlement is still hoped for, despite Carranzas aloofness and Huerta's determination not to resign. The mediators' earnestness is indicated by the fact that they have sent a second note to Car■ranz* inviting his late entry. American newspapers are pessimistic about the outcome. Huerta's increasing- difficulties are regarded as the only -encouraging feature. Huerta is threatened by the followers of Zapata and Villa, and they may come to blows over the possession of Mexico City. The C&iited States remains apathetic. While President Wilson is criticised for bi« apparent partiality for Villa, he is comaended for his obvious unwillingness to precipitate war. Huerta has informed the South Ameri•can mediators that the American operations around Vera Cruz have broken the •enistice.

The United States merely agreed to a suspension of hostilities, except to repel attack. It is reported that the Mexieaaa teve fired the Tampico oil wells. Garranza has notified Mr Bryan that he mow regards the American occupation of Vera Cruz as directed against Huerta, and not against the Mexican people. Carranza is acting promptly, with the •bjeet of pressing a campaign against Tampico and Matzatlan. The capture of San Luis and Potosi is reported. Zapistas have captured Cucrnavaca, in the Morelos State. Other rebel successes •re also notified.

HUBRTA'S SUPPLIES STOPPED. CORRESPONDENTS ARRESTED. Received 11, 12.45 a.m. Washington, May 9. A •erman steamer, laden with munitions of war for Huerta, returned to Fera Cruz without disembarking her fM-gt. She was bound for Puerto •Mexico. The Americans plan to return the targo to Germany. Another vessel, Hith a similar cargo, is expected, but it is believed she will not be allowed to land her supplies. {•reparations for holding the MediatioM Conference in Canada are completed. The Mexican envoys are preparing to leave. Mexico City, May 9. Tw« English correspondents, Bourke Mid Buffer, and au American pressman were arrested in Mexico City, but Were released after Sir Lionel Carden had protested to Huerta on their behalf.
