THE TAKAPAU CAMP.
SOME FACTS AND FIGURJW. The Takapau camp (saya the Wellington Post) is the biggest of the eerie* being held in the Dominion, over 6GM men and 1500 horses, drawn from ike Wellington, Hawke'a Bay and Tarairaki provinces, participating. The approximate strength jht the other district camps will be »3 follows: Otago and Southland camp, at Matare, 3700 men and 1000 horses; Canterbury and Westland, at Kowai, 3500 men and 10B# horses; Nelson and Marlborough camp, at Tapawera, 1100 men and 450 horses; Auckland camp, at Jfoutapu, 4500 mea and 1400 horses.
RATES OF PAY. Although the Territorials are obliged te serve compulsorily the State is not by any means one-sided in its demand. besides making every provision for the free transportation and feeding and comfort and convenience of the men while they are giving rip, their time on their country's behalf, the State will pay them for their services. Except where they are engaged in making backward training, the whole of the troops will be paid at schedule rates for the mine days they are in camp. It is estimated that under this head between £40,000 and £45,000 will be distributed in pay to men at the various encampments, and of this total the men at Takapau will receive some £BOOO or £9OOO. The rates of pay per day for the respective ranks are as follows:—Colonels, £1 Is-lieutenant-colonels, 15s; majors 12s* captains, 10s;, lieutenants and 'second lieutenants, 8s; sergeantß-maior, staffsergeants, 5s iid; .sergeants, ss; corporals, 4s 0d; other hands, 4s
STORES AND PROVISIONS. .- In order to gain an approximate idea of the large quantities of lores' provisions tliat are required t» : house mml feed the New Zealand Aimy during the short period it is in training tin, appended figures relating to the lakapau encampment will prove instructive. The supplies for the otrwr camps are in proportion.
