MR. FISHER'S MEETING.
Sir,—l utterly disagree with your subleader in last week's News' re Mr Fisher's meeting in Wellington. Because a man's polities is opposed to yours, is that a reason he should be refused a hearing? Remember, -,our paragon, Sir Joe.' Ward, was chased through the wharf sheds In- thai same howling crowd, when on his way.to England, hooting and groaning, niid again, on election night, 14 policemen had to' take him and his wife homo. I don't approve of these tactics: neither ought you or any decent person, and I hope for the credit of \ew Plymouth, when Mr. Isitt comes alon'g with his vapournigs about the "sins of the Reformers" (although he -conveniently forgets the sins of the Liberals re the strike I that our people will give him a good hearing, and not copy the under-won! of Wellington.—l am, etc., "
' C. MTf.L. [Our ;orrespondent is under a misapprehension. We have never endeavour*! to justify the behaviour of Ihe Wellington mob towards Mr. Fisher. Tt was as abhorrent to our sense of fair playas no doubt it was to our correspondent's. Kvei! a man of Mr. Fisher's pronounced volatility, inconsistency and insincerity is entitled to a fair' hcarintr. At the time Sir Joseph Ward was subjected to the malevolent attention of (lu. vulgar crowd in Wellington, when they invaded liia household grounds, and chased him on to the wharves, did the llcformers and their mouthpieces niter any word of reproof or protest ayainsi such treatment? They did not: Yaiher they excused it (in the grounds Unit il was but the natural expression ( ,f the risins tide of dissatisfaction with Sir .Joseph Ward and his Government. Now. the Cabinet Ministers of the Reform party are iMeitimg a taste of the same tr«afl> ment, wSich is inexcusable as it is 3k-:rn#eftrt.-*K§ ' • •: T'.7|lj|JH|
