CHRYSANTHEMUMS SHOW.
A SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. The exhibition of chrysanthemums and autumn flowers held in the Good Templar Hall yesterday under the auspices of the Horticultural Society attracted a good attendance ot horticulturists, who found plenty to interest and attract them in the admirable display, which lent a charming appearance to the hall. The exhibits were tastefully disposed, and as a set-oil' to thenmore dazzling attractions, were a number of beautifully decorated tables, which were the subject of a popular vote for the selection of the lirst favorite. The displays by the nurserymen were naturally the best in point of size, but private exhibitors made up in excellence anything which they lacked in size, notably so a small but choice collection of chrysanthemums by .Mr. Ooodson, of Hawera, and a fine general exhibit by Mr. J. H. Frethev, of Franldeigh Park. A dainty afternoon tea booth was well patronised. The exhibit of Duncan and Davies, Ltd., which occupied the whole of one side of the hall, comprised some eighty varieties of chrysanthemums. Choice delphiniums (new hybrid) made a tine showing, and an interspersal of violets, irises and heaths gave the whole a pleasing effect. Tuberoses and begonias were also conspicuous, but the most striking feature of all was a "purple Rangiora," a rarity of which there are few in .New Zealand, and only three in New Plymouth. There was also a fine specimen of adiantium phormosum, which i grows to a height of four feet. A ! gentas plemum from South Africa, the only one of its kind in New Zealand, was also noticeable. The Morshead Nursery (Jo. had a large display of chrysanthemums, some blooms being grown specially for show purposes, others under ordinary conditions, and all very fine. A choice little collection of peony-tlowered dahlias attracted much attention, and cactus and collarette varieties were also conspicuous. The display was backed by a wide miscellaneous collection of autumn blooms and pot plants. There were also some new varieties of nephrolepis, pretty flowering heaths, and autumn-tinted foliage such as red oak and liquid amber. The principal feature of the exhibit from the Hicks Nursery, at Tikorangi, was a display of single chrysanthemums, perhaps the best in the show. There were also some new dahlias, with ericas, begonias, and fine pot plants.' Among the private exhibitors, Mr. J. H. Frethey had a choice collection of autumn flowers, features which excited special attention were proteas, rata blooms, celoseas and ericas, all in tasteful profusion. ~Mrs. Scanlon had a nice collection of chrysanthemums, garden flowered variety, as well as some choice cactUß dahlias.
