School Committees
ANNUAL ELECTIONS. At the annual 'householders meetings on Monday night, the following schoel committees were elected for the ensuing year:— FRASKLEY. The report showed the financial position to be good. In the gymnasium account the most important work was the purchase of a new piano, the old one, being very much out of repair. It was anticipated the new instrument would ho free of debt early during the coming winter. The washhouse bad been • enlarged, this'work being done by the committee by voluntary labour. The asphalt surrounding the school had been re-tarred and sanded, and was now in very good order. It would be necessary for the incoming committee to considerably strengthen the fences round the gardens. Messrs. Lee and Leighton had been appointed to the committee vice Messrs. Bendall and Eva. No permanent charges had taken place in the teaching staff. Miss Winfield, who finished her term as probationer, had passed the teachers' examination and had been appointed assistant at Norfolk road. Owing to the serious ill-health of Mr. Winfield, he was compelled to apply for leave of absence early in December. The Board appointed Mrs. Firth as relieving head teacher, and the thanks of parents and the committee were due to her for the enthusiasm she brought to the work and the keen interest she displayed in the children. Mr. Winfield again took up his duties early this month, and it was sincerely to be hoped the great improvement in his health would be long maintained.. The committee had applied to the Board for an enlargement of the school, but the Board was of the opinion that the new school at Vogeltown would relieve the overcrowding here. This was largely a matter of opinion, and it was hardly fair that the gymnasium, after being condemned as a school, should now be used for that purpose. In. August last an association of the committees at this end of the Taranaki district was formed, and it was hoped that this movement will be of groat benefit to school committees and the cause of education generally.
GENERAL. A resolution in favour of the enlargement of the district was unanimously adopted. A resolution was passed drawing the attention of the Education Board to the urgency of the question of the enlargement of the school. A resolution protesting against the permanent use of the gymnasium was unanimously passed, and a suggestion was made that a petition from the parents to the Education Board should be circulated. The following, being the only nominations, were declared duly elected:Messrs. Hamilton, Prentice, Downes, Lister, Hooker, Ferguson, and Leighton. A vote of thanks to the teaching staff was carried by acclamation. Votes of thanks to the outgoing committee and the chairman concluded the meeting. At the subsequent meeting of the committee, Mr. A. C. Downes was elected chairman and Air. W. Hooker secretary. Meetings are to be held on the first Monday in the month.
WAEEA. There was a. fair attendance at Warea. Mr. T. Julian presided. The report showed that the number on the roll was: Boys 30, girls 21, total 51. Average for quarter ended March 31, boys •27.8. girls 20.1, total 47.9. This is the highest average that the school has had. A successful concert was held last November, and the proceeds devoted to school improvements. Tlic picnic was successful, the sum of £fi ISs being collected. The mistress drew attention to the state of the school. It was impossible for her to use a part that day as it was under watijr. Something must be done, or else the children's health wolild suffer. The carpenters were to be there three weeks to make additions to the residence. She was sorry the school was not in the same state then as now.
The balance-sheet showed receipts at £22, and expenditure £lB 10s lid. ■ The following committee was elected: —Messrs. .T. Lawn, 0. Parker, YV. B. Clarke, A. E. Sadler, S. Wells, G. Julian, C. S. Muir.

DURHAM. At the animal meeting of 'householders sixteen were present. -Mr. J. A. Bridgeman occupied the chair. The secretary lead a resume of the past year's operations, which showed a balance of £S Is, but this was considerably reduce-! by the expenses of cleaning and fuel, which had been paid since the books hail been closed. The high cost of- the two items mentioned were, it was pointed out, a severe drain on the resources of the committee. The reason why the outgoing committee had not put in hand certain improvements was because of tlm slowness shown regarding the transfer arrangements of the piece of ground /or the horse paddock, v.'hich had now been finally settled. It wa-s pointed out that tlie Board had agreed to assist in the erection of the bridge over the Makotawa by finding the material, and i!,' was hoped the settlers would see to it that the bridge was put in hand. Several questions relating to attendance, etc., were satisfactorily answered «nd( the statement and balance-sheet unanimously adopted. Matters in connection with the 'Mou Schools' Association were dealt with, and a motion recommending the new cornmil tee to favorably consider the request of the Association to increase the lew to 7s (ill was passed, the following motion was unaniiuouv ly passed: "That for the better workiu™ of the Taranaki Education District tlrs meeting of householders considers that the district should be enlarged to include at least the whole of .tile provincial district of Taranaki, and that a copv of this resolution be forwarded by the chairman, to the Minister for Education and to the for the district."
