OPUNAKE. A public meeting was held in the Town Hall to consider the water and drainage proposals submitted by the Town Board. The chairman of the Board (Mr. W. C. Dudley) presided. He stated it was proposed to bring the water in S-ineh pipes by gravitation about three miles up the lliain road to the town, at a point near the intersect ion of Layai'd street and Main South road. Down the main street would be a fi-inch pipe, ami intersection streets 3-inch pipe and i'/i-incli. Provision is made to practically serve the whole of the town. The drainage system takes in the wnolc of the business part of the town, from Oisborne terrace to the sea, and from Layar.l street northwards to Longfellow road. The total cost is estimated a.t £II.OOO. which would need a rate of thrcep»n.-e to pay the interc* and maintenance, amounting to £7l*. Mr. Climie, 1.E.. was present ami answered questions. lie was certain the Waian river in the driest, season would have sufficient water to provide for all .futurte needs, -both for domestic and fire purposes.
