ONLY A SHUFFLE.

THE CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Auckland, Wednesday. The circular from the Minister for Defence re finding work on roads for conscientious objectors to military training was discussed this morning by the Wattcmata Countv Council.

Mr McCathie promptly remarked: "Send them >to gaol." The Chairman: We do not want them on the roads. They had better be-made to clean up the camp. Mr. J. McU'od: We. should ask the Minister to compel them to drill for the defence of their homes, the same a» others. Why should one man's sons have to drill and another's be let off on the plea of conscientious scruples? What is fair for one man is fair for another. I have no time for conscien-

tious objectors to military training for defence of their homes.

Mr. J. O'Neal: They should to put in barracks in a central part of tlie Dominion and made to drill.

Mr V. Kerr Taylor: Perhaps if i.it • y lad to work on roads they might lose heir conscientious scruples. The chairman said such men would he

no good on the roads. The clerk pointed out that the Act made provision for the exemption of those with conscientious scruples. Mr McLeod: It's only a shuffle to get

out of drilling.. Finally, it \va.« resolved that the Council was of opinion that these men should lip made to drill the same as others.
