THE WELLINGTON MEETING.

The Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting opens at Trcntham to-day and will be concluded on Saturday. Tho chief events 011 to-day's card are tho North Island Challenge Stakes, New Zealand St. Leger, and the Thompson and Railway Handicaps. A large number of the Dominion's most select equines will be ecen under silk to-day, including the well-known weight-for-age horses. Kinperador, Recontre, Kinaldo, Merry Roe and Cherubim', and good handicap performers like Expect, Bleriot, Thrax, Ermengarde, Crown Pearl and others. Iho tracks at Trentham have been very moist lately, and it is to be hoped that the weather will clear up for the meeting. Trcntham on a wet day ia simply the quintessence of unpleasantness, as many local race-goers know only too well. A fair number of Taranaki sports went to Wellington thi3 week, and though the province do«s not claim many representatives in the various races, the iioings of Crown Pearl, Royal Anns, Sir Moseley, Ineuru. ,lohn Willie and Tetikura will be of interest.

The programme opens with the Hack Steeplechase, 2y 3 miles, for which fourteen have cried content. Keb. who will have the services of L. Hegarty, may be better backed than Sunrose and Ibhar'.

Only four figure in the St. Leger, run over a mile and three-quarters, and of the quartette Merry Roe also claims an engagement in the Thompson Handicap. The game little Aucklander showed that she has lost none of her dash when she put it all over lionny Helen in the Oaks at Ellcriilie, and if started she may give Rinaklo and Cherubini a merry "go" for first place. Staying has always been Rinaldo's strong point, and tiie Canterbury colt may give a good account of himself.

Eleven two-year-olds arc engaged in the Nursery Handicap, and of theao La Favoipita and Chakwana mtvy be the most seasoned.

Of the twenty accepted for in the Thompson Handicap, Emperador, Merry Roe, 1 1itaini, Valhalla, «Salzburg and Sveaborg are also engaged in other events, and probable starters are not easy to gauge. Valhalla, Expect, Bleriot and Red liook are tne nominal favorites, but if the going is holding the lightweights, Immer, ineuru and Sir Moseley, .may keep tJiem busy. the North Island Challenge Stakes, run over seven furlongs, will probably see Einperndor pitted against a good lot of youngsters, of which Recontre appears to be the smartest, Sauci and Moulu may also be dangerous. .Recent winners in John Willie and Lielasco will measure strides in the Silverstream Handicap. In the mud John Willie would probably be best suited. Another stiff problem will confront backers in the Railway Handimap. Crown Pearl has -been galloping in great style since going south, and on Monday morning made an exhibition of Hoyal Arms over six furlongs runs in lmin IS sec. Another horse that lias beet going well to Pavlova, and Bertrada, Ineuru and Valhalla have only to start to command a good following, Fifteen is the number in the Tinikori Handitap, and the field will include some fair /torses, like Sir Saracen, Raupani and Arlington. The issue looks vary ORM.

The meeting will be concluded on Sat- i urday, when the Trentham Gold Cup „ 'two miles), and Autumn Handicap (one mile and three furlongs) will be the-**-principal events on the programme. y
