THE FREEHOLD TENURE. The following interesting comment or tin- collapse of the general strike in Xew Zealand is contained in a letter written by.a subscriber to a London magazine:— "1 am strongly reminded of a conversation I bad with a prominent Xew Zealand business man whom it was my privilege to entertain when he visited this country two years ago. In reply to my imjuiry as to the progress of socialism in the Dominion and its future effects, itu said he felt no uneasiness, as the fever had abated, and the land system, by which farms were held on leases from the llovernment, with the view of increment value accr.-.ing to the community, had proved a complete failure. The tenants did not build, drain, reclaim or sink capital or labour beyond the necessities of the moment. Con'se<|iient]y the farmers had been made freeholders, 'buying t/heir farms, as the Irish tenants are doing, by a series of fixed payments. The result had been an industrial and political revolution: the farms were being worked and developed at high pressure, and the farmers and their families liad ibccomc mere conservative in their i political views. These are the men, apparently, who have now come to the rescue of the (Jovernnient so effectively. Is not this good evidence as to the magic of ownership? Another important mat. ter he mentioned was that compulsory military service had been adopted, and that a few years would see Xew Zealand m possession of a citizen army u f 2(10000 men; this, too, with a total white, population oi only one million or thereabout " Any prescription from any doctor dis I penscd at Dav.ss' I'iiarmacv: tor.—Davieii' Pharmacy.
