Many of the fanners around Auckland iiave been annoyed by the large numbers of mushroom gatherer* who, during tlie past few weeks, hare been invading their farms (says the Auckland Herald's Otahuhu correspondent). An agriculturist remarked the other day: "The people of the towns and villages appear to think that they hare a better right to the mushrooms that we farmers have, for they come boldly into our fields with kits and baskets, and even in our presence appropriate unto themselves all the mushrooms on which they can lay hands. Early the other morning I was amazed to find as many as twentyfive persons in one of my paddocks, and when they saw me comm? they did not budge an inch. 1 stood and looked at them and wondered more s-'id more. Being too angry to speak, I went, tack to the house. Now, mushrooms, at present prices, are more profitable than anything else the land produces. Are the farmers to keep what is less profitable and allow the public to take what is most profitable? Is there any reason in it, especially- as so many of us have to meet heavy rent and interest charges? It is time the Farmers' Union tliis matter up, ami removed from tie minds of the public the foolish notioa that the mushrooms belong to them, rather than to the people 011 whose land they grow. Many a farmer could make £6 a week out of the mushrooms on iiis laid, and some of them much more than tkat."
