lir. Y\. H. .Mores, principal, reported that, the new masters, Messrs ii. u. Uoltrii. M.A., and A. AY. .[Jiprose, were both in residence. It was decided- that the chairman act with Mr. Moyes- in the matter of improving the partlis. After considerable discussion as to the merits and demerits of various systems of heating for tilic rooms mentioned, the matter was left to the chairman and Mr. Moyes. LADY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT.

Miss Grant, principal of the Girls' High School, in the course of her report, suggested that some time before the end of the year the fact that the Board will establish a preparatory department if sufficient inducement, offers, should be advertised. She reported that the desire for special commercial training still existed among a section of the pupils, and at least twelve girls would take advantage of it. She also urged the necessity for establishing a laboratory for the girls, as unless they did practical scientific work the Department would not grant the capitation allowance, not would they be allowed to sit for examination. it was now impossible for them to use the boys' laboratory as they did ••t year. She asked for the necessary apparatus to carry on the work at tih'e girls' school, at a cost -of £SO. . After some discussion it was decided, on the motion of Mr. Ewing, to inform Miss Grant that the Board is proparo<l to authorise the expenditure required for a laboratory, but will not start commercial classes at present. The secmtary was instructed to obtain the necessary apparatus and material for the laboratory. Tt was decided to advertise the pronosed establishment of the girls' preparatory department later in the year.

THE NEW G-YMNASIUAI.

For some time past the Board has been communicating with the Department and the Minister for Education with a view to obtaining authority to borrow £3OOO on the security of the Board's reserves for the erection of gymnasium and concert hall at the Boys' High School. Tile Secretary for Education, writing on the 2nd inst., said that the matter was receiving attention. Mr. G. Hogben, Inspector-General, telegraphed asking for a plan of the proposed building. The plans will be forwarded immediately, with a request for an early answer to the Board's application. FINANCIAL. The acting-secretary (Mr. L. M. Monteatli) reported that the bank overdraft stood at £3!) Ss Bd, and accounts payable at £752 3s lid, making a total liability of £7Ol 12s 7d. Foes and rents receivable amounted to £340 6s 4d, leaving a balance of £445 fis 3d. The finance committee was instructed to apply to the Hon. James Allen, Minister for Education, for payment of a rebate of the rent of a temporary boarding establishment for the prirls, and for the other grants promised by him. ACCOUNTS, Accounts amounting to £752 3s 11(1 ■re passed for payment.
