WITCHCRAFT IX ITALY. HUNDREDS OF DUPES DESPOILED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright ' Received 20, 0.30 p.m. Rome, April 20. Amazing stories of witchcraft were , told at the Saßsari Assizes during a trial [ of several women for frauds. Evidence showed the existence of a Witches' League, professing mystic . power, enabling them to locate hidden treasure, and summon spirits from the dead. Hundreds of dupes parted with 1 thousands of pounds. A former governor of a prison, who was threatened with dismissal for allow-' nig a ferocious brigand to escape, spent all his private means on the wtiches, who undertook to get the brigand seized by demons in the mountain fastnesses and carried through the air to the prison cell. Many emigrants repatriating from America were despoiled of their savings. Rosa Artu, one of the prisoners, known as the Saint of Sassari, refused lawyers aid, saying tliat Heaven was sending St. Thomas and St. Augustine to defend her.
