ARREST FOR GAMBLING.
PROTECTION OF THE POOR MAN. Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. < A policeman walked into the charmed circle of a close-packedi crowd on the wliarf this morning, and arrested Jo. seph Belhaman, who appeared in the Court a little later, charged with participating in a game of chance. The police said the accused, who pleaded guilty, was not a member of the gang of spielers who made a living at the game (hazards). He did work for his living. The game, however, was becoming too common on the wharves, and developing into a naisanee. Counsel for accused said his client was a man of good character, who had apparently looked in at the giuno.in an idle moment and taken a hand in it. The Magistrate lined lielhaman 20s, in default 48 hours' 1 imprisonment.
