An alarming and extraordinary accident happened to the mail train near Goultmrn. The connecting rod of the engine broken and fell on tlic line. The fir;;t carriage missed it, but the second struck it and was derailed. The driver was unaware of the trouble and the derailed carriage was dragged, at the rate of forty miles an hour, for two miles to Joppa Junction, where the couplings broke. The front wheels of the second carriage in some marvellous manner here took the up line and the back wheels the down line and the carriage ran a distance of sixty-six yards broadside on and stopped in the middle of a bridge over a creek. The remainder of the train consisting of six carriage's and a brake van, containing many passengers stuck on the catch points and moved down an incline towards a dead end, attaining a trejnendou« speed. A terrific smash appeared imminent, when somethings caused the couplings between th* front and Tear carriage to break, operating the Westingihouse ibrake, and the carriages came to a sudden standstill and nobody was injured. A LESS LUCKY SMASH. Brisbane, April 20. In a train smash on the Gayndah lino seven «it.lie-trucks left' the line. Two fell over a bridge into a creek. All the rattle were killed and serious damage was done to th eline, bridge and rolling stock.
