Fatal Conflagration
ELEVEX PEOPLE KILLED. A NEW YORK FIRE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Xew York, April 17. Fourteen persons are known to have been killed ami four injured, one mortally, in a lire in a live-storey tenement. The firemen who arc searching the wreckage have announced that fourteen bodies have been recovered, among th'cm that of a woman with a babe in her amis. Several are missing. The bodies are so badly charred as to render identification almost impossible. The lire started in the 'basement of a (ivc and ten cent store, which occupied the first floor, and spread rapidly up the stairway. Many occupants of the apartment house escaped by the fire escapes. During the fire a man attempted to escape over the roof, but fell and was killed. Another man was descending a ladder, when it broke. Captain Smith, of the Fire Brigade, suspended by his feet from a window, eaug'ht him and held him safely until another ladder was procured, and the man was saved. The death roll totalled eleven.
