RAILING TARANAKI.

DISCUSSED BY HARBOR BOARD. '•■ At lost meeting of the New Plymouth Harbor Board, some discussion I took place concerning the Opunake railway line, and the .necessity for pushing , it on. A resolution by Mr. D. J. Hughes, and an amendment bv Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, were brought forward according to notice of motion, but owing to pressure of business were held over for further consideration until the next meeting. Since then the route for the line has been fixed and these were withdrawn. Mr. Hughes' motion had embodied a Recommendation that the Minister in jx--1 ing the route, consider the provision the Harbor Board is making for direct shipping of dairy produce from' New Plys mouth. It had further pointed out that ; a route from Moturoa via Orunake;to i the main line would bo most advantag--1 i cons to the district. In withdrawing this motion yesterday, Mr. Hughes remarked that he still hoped that the line from New Plymouth to Opunake would be made as soon as possible. He bad lately travelled frequently over the district between Waitara and Urenui, ■and had noticed there the improvement wrought by the use of basic slag. The railway had brought manures to Wai- > ! tara, and he hoped would in time bring T i them as cheaply from the port of Motu- ', -roa to Opunake farmers. p • Mr. Wilkinson stated that he would always support Tarannki railway expen- - Uiture, but it must be remembered that 1 district had last year received a bigger individual railway grant than any other, and now a new railway had been authorised. The New Plymouth-Opurfake route " .had been surveyed, and he hoped that the Government, if it could not build ,the line, -would.at least give the settlers the chance to do so.
