HOKTTIKA'S PLIGHT.
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT WILL ASSIST. PROTECTIVE WORKS PROJECTED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. The Hon. Mr. Fraser states that the Public # Works Department is taking an active part in the efforts being made to arrest the inroads of the sea at Hokitika. The District Engineer has been authorised to defray half the cost of .the work being done to protect the town. Plans for extensive foreshore protective works have been prepared. The inte»tion is to erect groins at right angles to the beach, similar to those erected fonty ycajs ago. The cost will be about £IOOO.
