RAILWAY FREIGHTS.
A FALLING OFF. _____ By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Monday. The financial returns for the New Zealand railways for the year ended March 31st, are not yet available, but the Minister for Railways (Hon. W. H. Herries) stated this evening tiiat it is estimated that the nett yield for the year will be about £3 12s Cd per cent. The returns for the year 1912-13 was .£4 Os 9d per cent., which with one exception, was the highest on record. It must be borne in mind, however, that the fiaucial year just closed did not contain an Easter period, whereas the previous year created by the Auckland Exhibition, of course, helped the railways, but not, .the Minister states, to the extent anticipated by the Department. On the other hand, the Maori epidemic and the strike detrimentally affected the railway revenue during the past year to an appreciable degree. Furthermore, the irterease in the pay of railway servants and other extra expenses incidental to tlic nevv regulations led to an additional expenditure last year of some ,CSO,OOO.
