HOSPITAL BOARD . MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs J. McAllister (chairman), C. D. Sole, J. Smith, J. Christoffel, E. Walter, E. Hinc and A. Meredith. Mr. Rogers sent an apology for absence. ! * The Health Inspector reported that I three canes of scarlet fever and one of chickcn-pox had been notified in the Stratford borough, two of the fever cases being removed to the hospital and the premises fumigated, while the other case, and that of chickenpox, had been isolated. A suspected case of scarlet fever was notified from Whngamomoua county. A suspected case of typhoid had been removed to the hospital and the premises disinfected, but the case proved not to be typhoid. A case of infantile paralysis wafil notified in Stratford county. The patient had been isolated ana the premises disinfected. It was stated by the secretary (Mr. H. Penn) that another case of infectious disease had been reported in the borough since the date of the inspector's report. The Health Inspector also reported having inspected the whare on section 833, Miranda street, belonging to the Public Works Department, and recommended that the owners be asked to put the same in order for occupation, or make it secure against occupation by vagrants. The Board's solicitor notified having received £46 12s 9d on account of fees due to the Board. Mr. Sole brought up the question of tlie state of the borough pound, remarking that nothing 'had been done since the attention of the Council had been called thereto. It was decided to bring' the matter to the attention of the-Health Department. Mr. Sole reported having visited the hospital and found everything satisfactory. Mr. Smith also reported having visited the hospital. He found that the patients were being well treated. The action of the chairman in accepting Mr. King's tender for tile additions to the nurses' accommodation was confirmed. In connection with the jirpposed site for a cottage hospital at Kohuratahi it Was decided that Mr. Hill be asked to submit an offer in writing 1 for the site. The secretary submitted the estimates of receipts and expenditure for the current year. The receipts were set down at £877 on capital account and £2950 on ordinary aooount, including balance in hand on capital account of £l4l 12s, and on ordinary account £56'2. The expenditure was estimated at the amount of receipts. Mr. Sole, in moving £he adoption of the estimates, congratulated the ratepayers on the excellent manner in which the hospital was managed, and especially eulogising the work of the secretary. The motion was seconded by Mr -Smith and carried., Mr. Penn briefly acknowledged the compliment. A formal resolution was passed making the following levies «f.2%d and fl'/id per £IOO capital value:—Stratford county £OS 10s Id pel month, Stratford borough £ls Os 4d, TOiangamomona county £ls 9s, making a total for the year of £1157. The Board went into committee to consider tenders foT supplies. On resuming, it was decided :to accept the terder of the Co-operative Association for groceries and bread; that of Mr. Colson for meat; that of Mr. L. H. Neagle for milk, and that of Mi. > Garrett Wilson for funerals. Mr. J. McAllister was unanimously reelected chairman of the Board. Accounts were passed for iipayment and ;ihe Board rose.

BERNARD S PICTURES The great attraction at His Majesty's Theatre to-night is Patlie's famous colored detective drama, entitled'"Xick Winder and the Kidnappers." The plot runs ,ob (follows: —The Marquis d'Armor decides to make wliat reparation lie can for past harshness, and advertises for Jus .daughter-in-law. The latter. Franrfine Cardin, decides to answer the advertisement and attempts to 'borrow a suitable dress from a neighbor. Directly the .latter loams for what purpose it is required, she and 'her family overpower Francine and carry out an imposture with ,tli£.Marquis d'Armor as the victim. Safely installed in the wealthy home, they carry on a systematic series of thefts. Nick Winter is called in to investigate, and after many adventures he succeeds in capturing the criminals and bringing' Francine into her own. An excellent lot of supporting films, together with a good musical programme, makes up an enjoyable entertainment.

TOWN H&LL PICTURES. The attractive programme at tl>e above theatre was greatly appreciated last night. The star drama is the *Tnd.ian Uprising," an historical Kalent drama of 3000 ft. "The Converts" is a drama by the A.B. Ctmpany, and must be seen to be .believed. ''Tresses and Curls" is an educational film bv the Pathe Company, Then-iherc is a scenic entitled "Trout Fishing in New Zealand," and a drama by the Luliin Co., headed "When Love Leads" "Tlie First Kow" is a comic by the Pathe Company. Other pictures are: "The Miniature (Eciison drama) and "Tcmperatee Lecture" (Cosmo Company). Mr. A. .Richardson will play appropriate music.. Prices as advertised.

Two of the nurses at the Stratford Hospital, Misses Condon and Belton, passed their examination last month in physiology and anatomy. Mr. J. McAllisiter was yesterday unanimously re-elected chairman of the Stratford Hospital Board, his services being highly eulogised by the members of the Board.

According to a statement furnished to the Hospital Board, the rateable values of the contributing districts as at March 31, 1913, were: Stratford county,£2,o4o,577„ Wliangamomona county £481,945, and Stratford borough £480,123. The approximate population of the Stratford hospital district as at April 1, 1914, is given by the Registrar-General as 10,953, that for Stratford county being 5973, borough 3015, Wliangamomona county 1914, and Maoris 51. During the past month there were 20 patients admitted to the Stratford Hospital ; 17 were discharged and 14 remained. Eight operations were performed. No deaths occurred there during the period.

The only unfortunate incident which occurred at the Easter Monday gymkhana was in the steeplechase event, the pony ridden by Master Milton Bayly coming a 'cropper" over the hencoop and falling on the rider, who had a collarbone broken. The plucky youth walked off as if nothing worse than a good shaking had been received, but it was fortunate that no worse injury resulted from (sluch a bad spill.
