HUGEV ABANDONED IN AMERICA. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright New York, April 10. The University of California has decided to abandon Rugby football and is returning to the old American intercollegiate game. The team's coach declares that the English game is too rough, and that there is a greater chance of injury. Tile coach asserts that liugbv is likely to be wiped out of American colleges within five years.

A WEST COAST MATCH. Greyniouth, Saturday. The football season opened to-day with a match between White Star's (Greyniouth) and White Stars (Westport), the former winning by eight to three.

COSTUME FOOTBALL. The match between Thursday and Saturday players on the Sports Ground on Saturday, in which there was much grease and paint, little concerted play, and not a little merriment, resulted in a draw, 3 all.
