The Standard says that the controllers of Germany's espionage employed a private detective in a firm's office in London to ascertain the financial posi- | tion of naval officers at Portsmouth, Devonport, and Chatham, with a view to the discovery of financial troubles which would expose them to temptation. Scotland Yard's investigations at Hamburg failed to trace the enquirers' identity, which was cunningly concealed.
