THE CARNIVAL QUEEN CONTEST.

Rarely has so much interest been manifested in a local allair as wa«s shown in the "election" of a "Carnival Queen'' that came to a finality on .Saturday evening and resulted iu the success of the country candidate, Miss Hisliop, who, together with her Committee, is to be heartily congratulated. Indeed, all concerned, all those who "ran'" mid worked for the candidate, are to be complimented upon their efforts, lor without their work there would have been ,uo competition, no' rivalry, no appeal to the sporting instincts'' of the community, and therefore no enthusiasm and excitement—and no funds for the Band! As a money-raiser, the scheme would be hard to excel, and the Band is very fortunate indeed to have launched it and reaped so rich' a harvest. it should have no apprehension regarding its finances now; they should be placed on a particularly strong footing. The Band should now be given a new lease of life and usefulness, and we trust it will lose no opportunity of showing its appreciation of the great help it has received fiom all sections of the community. A real live, strong Band, capably conducted and wisely managed, is a valuable asset to any town, but it is of no advantage to a town to possess a first-class band unless it makes frequent appearances and I gives the public a taste of its quality. It cannot be said that the Band in the past has done as much in this respect as the public were entitled to expect. We look confidently forward, however t 0 a change in this and other directions. The Citizens' Committee, who have organised such successful schemes for augmenting the Rami's funds, can we feel sure, be relied upon to ensure the public getting fuller value for the support if has so unstintingly given the Band on this occasion and on previous occasions.
