THE EASTER SEASON.
HOLIDAY FIXTURES. The Easter season is on us, and holi-day-makers from ail parts of New Zealand will be seeking recreation during what js always a popular holiday season, m a town like ours, wn,t'n is v*.i fitted to cater for the needs of the jaded business man seeking rest, and the sportsman in search of mild excitement. Holiday fixtures in New Plymouth this Easter are .particularly numerous . and diversified.
CARNIVAL QUEEN. One of the principal .ttraetions will be the closing 0 f the Carnival Queen election, which has kept public intern, t at almost fever pitch for the past few weeks. The claims of the various fair candidates for royal honors have been well supported by energetic committees throughout the period of canvassing, and to-night will decide between them. The poll will close finally at the Good lemplar Hal! at 0.30 p.m. Screenings ot the positions of the various candidates will be shown there as the counting proceeds. The Arcadian Revellers, who kept New Plymouth merry for nine days, will contribute sow»s, dances, and choruses. The I Masked Merry-makers and Grotesque | Giants will form a procession the like I of which has never been seen iA New Plymouth before marching from the } Red House corner to the scene of ithe • final count. This attraction promises to j form the centre of a large crowd of pco- { pie. (
THE BEACHES. Given fine weather, the splendid ] beaches of New Plymouth will doubtless form the happy hunting ground for all ages and sexes. The energetic East End Committee has arranged a monster Sports <v.„thering on its popular reserve for Easter Monday. One of the principal attractions in a long programme 6f novelt'es will be a tug-of-war. There will be swimming for both sexes, and a life-saving competition between the East and West End Clubs. A motor launch will be on the Henui river all day. Odd moments can be profitably filled in at ocean wave, swing boats, '-hoop-la," bran tubs, donkey rides and kindred excitements. A social and dance in the uavilion will terminate the proceedings. .Special train 'arrangements have been made. The West End Foreshore Improvement .Society has also organised an Easter Monday picnic at 'Kawaroa Park, a beautiful seaside reserve close to the baths, which is rapidly growing in popularity. There will be a .tug-of-war for boys' teams of varying ages, sports all - day, an Easter tree, guessing tonmetilions and amusements of all description*. Mr. Van Heck's orchestra will supply ] music. GOLF TOURNAMENT. Followers of the) ancient game of golf will Jind plenty to attract them in the Taranaki championship meeting and handicap tournament to be held on the Nga-Motu links at AVaiwahaiho to-day Monday and Tuesday. Entries have been received fiom all parts of New Zealand, and all the oveflts are likely to be keenly contested. Tlie Witiora and Taniliini (iolf Clubs' weH-equipped links, too, will doubtless be visited by many golfers during the holidays.-
RIPLE SHOOTING. Rifle shooting will occupy considerable attention during the holidays. The chief event will be a Territorial match to be fired on the Rewa Rewa range on Easter Monday, open to Territorial.', senior cadets and. members of the general traini'.juvs. There will be speoi.il competitions for senior cadets. The New Plymouth Dcfi'nee Rille Chub's team will journey to Pa tea on Monday to fire a match with the Patea club.
BOWLING. Howlers will find plenty to attract them during the holidays' and several outside teams will be visiting New Plymouth. The New Plymouth Chili will play a match with a team from the St. John's club this morning. The Fitzroy club, played at Stratford all day on Good Friday. ' They will play St. John's, this afternoon and luglcwuod at Fitzroy all day on Easter Monday. jlie. West End club will be occupied principally with club competitions.
ATHLETIC SPORTS. T)u> cricket season is just closing, and the football season is uliont to begin. To-day will see contest?; in hoth game:-. TIIK THEATRES. To-night will see the staging of "No Mother "to Guide Her" at the Theatre Royal by the George. Willonghby Company.
