CATERING FOR TOURISTS.

-NEW PLYMOUTH'S XKKIK

WORK OF THE LEAfiI"K.

j t At a gathering yesterday of the cxectto tive of the New Plymouth Tourist and j Expansion League to say farewell to ( the Rev. J. \Y. .Burton, some interesting ' n remarks were made concerning the necessity for more fully catering for the needs of visitors and tourist-. In the course of a few remarks in ueknowledgment of a presentation made to him, Mr. Burton stated that whil.. he had no wisli to intrude his advice , there were one or two points which he ; thought the League would do well to , keep in view. The lirst of these was . increased facilities for tourist visitors ' to the town. At present he believed the hotels were nearly always full,' and there was a lack of accommodation during an influx of holiday visitors. A register of vacancies in hotels should cevtitinly be kept, so that tourists might be readily advised where to go. Imt hthought more accommodation should be erected to cope with a holiday influx He also considered that more should he done with Mount Egmont. At present the cost of getting there f,„- „ holiday was prohibitive to the average m-in There should he a regular vice at cheap rates to and from the mountain. This would, he thought result in a great increase of trallic to the mountain, and the cost of it might possibly be helped out by a subsidy. If the League were to be a' success moreover, there must be an increased public support. A large seel ion of the gcneial public was quite apathetic on the liiiestion, and evidently thought that the League was a body which existed largely for self-glorification, and that its membeis did not do the amount of hard \\otK that they really performed. Somehow the public must be brought to sunport the League more strongly, for without that it could not hope to extend its , operations as it should do. The public conscience must be aroused to a realisation of its personal responsibilities, and accord the League, which was directed by enthusiastic and capable men. further ( support. The town, he felt sure, would be Hie gainer.
