AMONG THE CADETS.
RIFLE TOURNAMENT AT INGLEWOOD. A rifle-shooting tournament was held at Inglewood yesterday, open to all cadets in Taranaki. The meeting was a genuine .success from all points of view, and reflects great credit upon Lieutenant Humphrey, of Inglewood, who was responsible for its organisation. This is perhaps the. first meeting of its kind in the Dominion, and should prove the forerunner of many. It proves to us all that only jiut a little encouragement is needed from the general public and a little initiation on the part of officers, and great things may be looked for from the lads themselves. There were 91 entrants, hailing from all over Taranaki. This number, be it noted, exceed* the totals of the recent meetings of the Taranaki Rifle Association, and clearly proves that enthusiasm in the shooting line is not waning. Encouragement must, be given. Of the shooting, much could be said. On the whole? it was it was really good. The weatlfer was decidedly unfavorable to even trained ■"hots. The wind was in three directions, varying in strength from normal to lldeg. left to 7dcg. right. When we remember that, these lads shot ov°r service sights on service target*, and under s.rvicc conditions, we must admit that the shooting was first-rate. To get a possible at 500 yds, under the abovementioned conditions, is ereditable. _ This was done by Cadet Liinmer, of Waitara. the same" lad making 3(1 out of a possible 40 at 200vda rapid , time lmin. This was i„ the shoot-off between the first, second and third prizewinners in that competition. At the close the prizes wore presented by Mrs Humphrey. Captain Stevens, in « short speech, thanked those who were responsible for the. success, and stated that the Waitara team would be presented with silver medals, which he considered thpy deserved for coming bo close up to the winning company. It had been well contested, and Waitara 'had done extremely well to find the third place.
