ENCOURAGING TERRITORIALS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palii&tua, Tuesday. The Pahia tua Honorary Territorials for some time past have been giving cash prizes to the local foot and mounted corps for the best kept tents at encampments. The Minister of Defence has now sanctioned the use of a drillshed by the Honorary Territorials for roller skating, enabling funds to be raised for farther prizes. TEACHERS' GRIEVANCES. Pahiatua, Tuesday. Some disappointment has been occasioned among teachers in this district over the Arrangements made for voluntary camps held for physical instruction. Originally notices were sent to all teachI ers under the Wellington Board, stating j that they were to report themselves for physical culture at Wellington on March 27th. Wairarapa teachers are now ordered to assemble at Masterton in May. The teachers are aggrieved over the lat- i ter proposal, and claim that it is hard 1 on those teachers who sacrificed a fortnight of their .summer holidays in the expectation of a holiday at Easter, and ■ who, in the ease of nuiny assistants, now find all their holiday-making frustrated. VITAL STATISTICS. Dunedin, Tuesday. The vital statistics at the Dunedin oflice for the month of Jlareh are as follow:—Births, 17G; deaths, (17; marriages .j4. For the corresponding month of last year the figures are, 121, 01, and ,9a respectively. The great difference in 'marriages for the two corresponding months is; due to Easter having fallen last year in March. Wellington, Tuesday. Following are the vital statistics for Wellington for the month ending March 81, also for the past month of March, the previous month's figures being shown in parenthesis:— Births, 184 (172); deaths, 08 (157); marriages 81) (122). For the quarter the births were: !>3.j, deaths 207, marriages 200. Of this number 71 marriages were performed by the register. DISGRACEFUL DRINK CASE, Christchurch, Yesterday. In fining Samuel Dixon £5 and costs for supplying liquor to intoxicated Natives at Rakaia pah, Mr. Bishop. S.M., remarked that it was the most disgraceful case in all his experience. If he had his way every Maori would be prohibited. Witnesses had seen men lighting oil a launch. WHISKY TEMPTS FIREMEN;. j Dunedin, Yesterday. | At the Police Court this morning James Embleton and James Tinumey, firemen, were sentenced to fourteen ' days' imprisonment for embezzling liq- i uor from the ship's stores en llie steamer Waimate.
