INGLEWOOD NEWS.

I (From Our Own Correspondent). Our street lights for some inexplicable cause Hailed last Saturday night,'- and again on Monday night they were not in evidence until long after dark. This, I believe, is the first time that our street lights have been shut off on a Saturday night, and this after the expense of n new dam. overhauling plant, etc., and a good season from a water point of view.

A few oE the councillors, with Mr. Palmer, the. engineer, and Mr. Scallyj the borough foreman, paid a visit to the new electric dam recently, and found matters in a very satisfactory state, everybody expressing' satisfaction with [ the job. I understand that the actual cost was, roughly, within five pounds of the estimate, and this explodes the unfounded rumors that were circulated With regard to the excessive cost. While discoursing on the welfare of the town, I hope the lire inspectors (if there are any) will take steps to see that a fearful calamity such as recently occurred at the Upper Hutt does not take place here, as I understand that there are enough explosives stored in the borough to remove the best part of : the town from its foundations. Mr. Kilpa trick, of Waiongoua, has sold his farm, and is now a resident of Inglewood.

The Royal Pierrottes gave their promised concert in the Town Hall last night, but I am informed that the house was not by any means as large as might bo expected from such distinguished amateurs.

Mr I-I. Grayling has just completed a six-roomed house for Mr. Putt, of Tarata, and I am informed that the intenor is finished in quite a novel way, the walls and ceilings being covered with sheet asbestos, and panelled out similar to our new Town Hall.

1 noticed a carpenter working in the railway yards to-day, and hope our much-discussed turnstile is not going to be removed.

Our worthy Mayor, Mr George Young, .seems likely to be returned unopposed for a further term of office.

There is to be a big day here on Thursday for the senior cadets. Over a hundred boys will be present.
