SWIMMING.
A SLCCKSSECL CARNIVAL. Despite numerous counter-attractions, the swimming carnival arranged by th<J Aew Plymouth Swimming Club to assist their Carnival Queen candidate, .Miss A. Hawke, drew a crowded attendance, and the funds must benefit considerably.' The officials—Messrs. Hawkins (starter) Mayner and It. Paul (judges), A. It. Standish (timekeeper), and Mynott and Bertram! (call, stewards)—attended strictly to business, and pushed the races through without* any delay. All the finishes were good, reflecting great credit on the .handicapping of Mr. L. Whitaker. The relay race.'between the Hawke and Stohr families _and the rest of the club proved very exciting. First one and then the other would take the lead, and the issue was in doubt to the finish, when Brown squeezed! 'home try a touch. The dusk hunts provided much amusement. The playing of a splendid musical programme by Mr Van Heck's orchestra considerable enlivened proceedings. The results were as follow: 50yds Maiden—Sutherland (flsi-c) 1, Grimmer (3aec) 2. Also started: Baylev (3sec), K. Ward, Mander and Dale (0 see). Won !>v a yard. Time, 42sec.
50yds QWW Race—M. Mouatt (?sec) 1, 6. Mouatt (7sccJ) 2, I. Hawke (scr) 3. Also stalled: D Hawke (lsco), A. Hawke (2sec), H. Rollo (lsee), and K. Johnson (3sec). Won by two yards. 50yd* Handicap—First heat> S. Hawke (•tsee) 1, K. Stohr (6scc) 2. kho started: Brown (scr), Court ['fisec), Bayley (Bsec), Hooker (8soc), Cock (fiseej. Time, 35 3-ssec. Second heat: J. Stohr (flsee) 1. Kelly (Ssee) 2. Also started: Bueon (2see), Yates (Bsec), and Sutherland (]().-ee). Time, 38s»c. • Pinal: Hawke 1. Kelly 2. J. Stohr 3. AW oualified started. Won easily, onlv a touch separating second and third. Time, 32'/ 3 sec. 33yd<i Roys' Race—Hooker (Bscc) 1, Buclcman (2sec) 2. Also started: Yates (2sec). A good race. Time, 2Gseo.
Relay Race—Misses O. Mouatt, M. Mouatt, IT. Rollo, E. Johnson, and Messrs. S. Paul, A. R. Standish, Bacon and Brown, beat Misses Hawke (31 and Stohr, an* Messrs. Hawke and Stohr f3), bv a touch after a most exciting finish. Men's Dive,—C. Brown 1. Bert Stohr 2. These two had to dive oft' 'o decide, so close was the result. Also competed: Bacon, J. Stohr, K. Stohr.-Suther-land. Hooker, Yates, George, Grunner, and Yale.
Duck Hunt —After a good chase Bacon captured the duck. 33yds race—First heat: Grimmer (f> sec) 1, Hawke (3sec) 2. Also .started: Paul Clew) and Brown (scr); time, 22 sec. Second heat: Kelly (Gscc) 1, J. Stohr (3sec) 2. Also started: Baton (1 sec), Svkes (4f.ee), and Box |6scc); tim, 1 , 23sec. Final: Knll-" 1, Grimmer 2. All qualified started. Won by a touch. Time, 23sec.
Ladies' Dive—Miss I. Thompson 1, R. Thomson, H. Rollo, and M.Tiplady (tie) 2. Also started: D. Hawke, E. Johnson, Girls' Duck Hunt —After eluding a bevy of "iris for a few minutes, the duck was ultimately captured by Miss K Johnson.
