A POPULAR 11ANDICAPPEK. Tlu.se who were fortunate enough to witness the splendid finishes at the Ivangitikei meeting on Wednesday aid J hursday were loud in the praise of that clubs popular weight-adjuster Mr George Morse. Finishes Were close in ■nearly all events, particularly on the •second day, and were an illuminated cstimoiual ( a „d a purse of sovereigns thrown 'in) to the good work of the well-known weight-adjuster. Much of the success of a meeting depends on the correct sizmg-up of the various horses —an arduous task indeed when one considers the frailty of cnuine nature, the "•strength" of human cunning, and the mistakes of more or less experienced horsemen. Mr Morse has all the qualities which arc demanded from a successful handicapper. lie is fearless and impartial. Bill Brown is the same as the Hon. Thingimebob to him, and he takes no notice of "rumors," a failing which has tripped m> many a member of his profession. Auckland's slice'is owes much to Mr Morse's untiring wo";, and the same applies to our own club, amMo the Egmont, Wanganui, Raw,-1-tikei and Marlborough clubs. It 'is pleasing to record that the. Marlborough Club lias suitably recognised Mr Morse's ability with -a 'substantial "rise." and several of our Taranaki clubs intend following suit this season. Racing is on the boom just now, and an the fields grow larger so the handicupper's troubles multiply. Nowadays the nomination lists are as long as eternity promises to be!
