THE TL'KAI'A CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. Mr Jas. Mclk'od presided over a good attendance; at the twentieth annua! meeting of the Tukapa Football Club last night. The annual report congratulated members on a most successful season. The. senior team won the Northern Division Championship without sustaining a defeat, but were boa ten by Wal'

mate in the play-oil' for the Provincial Championship. The juniors still found it hard to battle against some of the heavier opposing teams, but it was hoped that this season would see them placed on a much' stronger footing, as it was vitally necessary for the club to have younger players coming on. Financially the club was in an exceedingly healthy condition, this being largely attributable to the energetic collection of subscriptions, insurance moneys and other expenses by the honorary secretary, and to the ready response bv players. Gate receipts had also shown an increase of 30 per cent on the previous year's figures. Three members of the club, Messrs. Stohr, Loveridge and Brown had represented New Zealand teams last year and the club was also well represented in the ranks of the provincial teams. PAINTERS' AWARD AGAIN. AWT II Kl! PROS ECCTIOX. THE (.'LA I'SIC EXPLAINED, Some few weeks ago Xippert Bros., of Xew Plymouth, painters, were sued by Mr. W. Slaughter, inspector, of awards, for a breach of the Painters' and Paperhangers' Industrial Agreement, in having perm itted their workmen to work overtime. A nominal penalty was inilieted, his Worship remarking that a clause which denied men the right to make U]) for lost time, was distinctly anomalous. Ju the. .Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. A. Ciooke. S.M., an echo of this case was heard, when the inspector proceeded against (leorge (lohlsworthy for having worked overtime for Xippert Bros, on the occasion in question. Mr. T. King (instructed by Mr. A. 11. Jolinsfanc) appeared for defendant. Mr. Slaughter said that of the two men who had worked for Xippert Bros, on the High School job on the Saturday afternoon in i|iiestioii, only one of them, the defendant, was a member of the Union which accepted the agreement. The non-unionist could not be proceered against. Mr. King said his client admitted (he offence, but contended that it was a trivial one. Mr. Crooke, S.M.: This clause appears to have been an oversight. Mr. Slaughter: Xo, not exactly ail oversight. though tlie reason for it may be a little tlillicult to see. The matter was discussed by the l T nion, and I understand that one reason urged in its favor was that it would lessen unemployment,. for if 110 overtime could be worked, more men would have to be employed. It would prevent one man from milking a big cheque while another man had no work. It is perhaps not so bad as it looks. Defendant said that when the clause was discussed at a meeting of the Union several members opposed it, but if was carried on a majority vote, lie did not see why he should be deprived ot the opportunity of making up for lost lime. On ihis occasion Xippert Bros, had been delayed by bad weather and had asked him il he would work overtime. lie readily agreed, as he ueve> refused to help an employer, and was glad to make up for lost time, 1 lis Worship said he must give judgment in terms of the agreement, lint the amount would be onlv "is.
