TECHNICAL COLLEGE SUBSIDY. Mr. A. Gray, Director of Technical hducation for Taranaki, wrote asking for an increased subsidy to the New llymouth Technical College. Ha wai aware that the Council had its hand* full with subsidies, but submitted that the importance of the work" of the College justified the increase asked for. At present there were nearly 80 pupils is the day classes, 21 taking engineering and 40 commercial training, while the remainder were girls taking a domestic course. He pointed out that two permanent instructors had just been appointed at a cost of about £SOO per annum, and although this expenditure had been justified by the increase in the number of pupils, still he would like to be in a position to progress still further and a subsidy of, say, £SO from «he Council would materially help in thia direction.
The matter was referred to the Estimates Committee for the next financial ANNIVERSARY DAY. < *' l
Mr. C. W. Williams, president of the Moturoa Seaside Committee, asked {hat on 'Anniversary Day the Moturoa road, from Ngamotu road, should be closed to vehicular traffic from 8 a.m,, as lis committee felt that if vehicular traffiiM were permitted to the foot of the break. water there would- be a grave risk of accident. The committee undertook lt> provide a suitable accommodation paddock for each vehicle and hone at s> small fee. --*■»* f Permission was granted. SOLDIERS'GRAVES. SEWERAGE. The borough engineer reported that the main sowers were now laid throughout the central portion of the town, except Young Street East. In this locality there were ten houses which shoald be connected. At present the drainage was carried into the street guttonjjX which in hot weather was very insanitary and unsightly. This sewer could be laid cither from King street to Young street, or from St. Aubyn street through the Harbor Board property^' across Queen street to Young street.' The first route would cost £93 and give twelv connections, and the second £55, exclusive of easements, and give ten connections. The first would probably have more future connections. The first route was decided on. JJ QUESTION OF SANITATION'. { The borough engineer, reporting on, the condition of a butcher's shop in Devon street, of which complaints had from time to time been made at the Council table, stated that under the shop was an unused cellar, which ordinarily was dry, except for water which. flowed in from the street across the floor of the collar in a small about six inches wide, and entered a pfps* when carried it under thd adjoining' buildings out to the Huatoki stream.* At present a small slip wasitsgyeriojp the inlet to this pipe and prevTMn; the water flowing freely. The v liter had risen to a height of about a foot and' was percolating through the earth MK*' der the adjoining buildings and was per- '' fectly clear and fresh. If the pipe ' were cleared the water would resume its ordinary course. A copy of the report will be sent lo the owner, who will be requested t» carry out the engineer's recommendation.
