SWIMMING.
LONG DISTANCE IX OBEX SEA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A novel swimming event, so far as Wellington is concerned, took place on Saturday afternoon, when thirteen started in an open sea race from Rona Bay wharf to Day's Bay wharf, the distance being betweoen "three-quarters and one mile. A strong, cold southerly wind made the sea very clioppy, but ten competitors finished.* V. G. Wise (fimin 20sec. handicap) won in 22min Mlsec. L. Butler (4min 40sec.) was .second and H. Jenkinson (limn 40sce.) third. The scratch man, R. Newman, made the best time, viz., lOmin 4sec. The swimmers went with the wind, so that the times were thus considerably better than were expected in the cold and broken water.
