The Senate is disinclined to sanction inviting the Rochette Commission with judicial powers, fearing it will l-e a step towards deputies usurping the judicial power as they have usurped » large share of the executive power.
Senator Gauthier will succeed M. Monis as Minister of Marine.
Unconfirmed reports state that several were killed and many wounded in electoral riots.
There were several aflrays at M. Oalmctte's funeral. Cries hostile to MCaillaux aroused counter demonstrations. One of M. Caillaux's supporters at Montmartre fired a revolver. The police drew their swords and dispersed the crowd. A number were injured and several arrests were made.
iiefore the Rochette Commission, M. Monis gave evidence that M. Caillaux in March, 1911, told him that if the prosecution was not adjourned it would be disastrous. Company promotings which had hitherto been suppressed for political (reasons would be disclosed. M. Fabre agreed that adjournment would not affect the case, but he feared the public might misinterpret the decision. M. Monis denied that undue pressure was exercised upon M. Fabre. , FURTHER DISCLOSURE. Received 22, 5.5 p.m. Paris, March 21. M. Caillaux's evidence confirmed M. Monis'. M. Fabre denied M. Caillaux's allegation that although the evidence was inadequate M. Briand had ordered M. Rochette to arrest De Lcsle, the president of the Criminal Court of Appeal. He testified that he was unaware of any political pressure, and agreed to a postponement in tlie interests of good justice.
