For 1912 the total and the increase is £50,401, but, taken per head of population the amount last year was £3 14s per head against £3 liy 3 d in 1012. The quantities per head worked out: .Spirits, .78 gallons, wines .181 gallons, beer 9.200 gallons. i The statement points* out that the amount spent on liquor would pay the tptal railway expenditure in interest on the cost of the railways, and leave enough to pay the sick and funeral benefits of all the friendly societies in Xew Zealand. For a household of five persons the average yearly expenditure is £lB 10a.
