MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Kenneth Andrews and Donald M'Kenzie, for driving vehicles after dark without lights, were ea;i fined ss, an.l costs 10s (Id. Mr. Ronald Quilliam prosecuted on behalf of the Taranuki County Council. Arthur Roberts and Antonio Bartlett, for cycling after dark without lights, were each lined 7s (Id, and costs 7s. Mr. B. Tippins, H>oiuh Inspector, prosecuted in these cases! TERRITORIAL CASES.

For failure to attend Territorial parades, lines were inflicted as follows: Harold flunn, Roy Ellin', Alfred W Mason, Reginald 11. Gordgc, Royce John Pepperill and Richard Lowe, all os and 7s costs. Leslie Gordon Goldsworthy, Jack Eva, Arthur Godfrey Monh Henry N'.. pert and Herman C. E. Nippert, who were all either second offenders or men with poor records of attendance, were fined 10s, and 7s costs each, William Frederick Bishop and Henry R. "Harnett, who had fairly good records of attendance, were each fined 5s without costs. Cecil Johnston, convicted three times previously, was lined £2 and costs 7s. John Henry William Gillbanks, a pre- : vious offender with a poor 'attendance i record, was fined £l, and costs 7s. i Xelson A. Hill pleaded not guilty. He was medically unfit »n 1 lad forwarded certificates of this to the captain of ■ the company. Since then no demanl was made on him to attend parades. Sergeant-Major M'Glade had no knowledge of these facts, and the case was adjourned pending further inquiry. ' G»orge Mack, a senior cadet., said that he was now in Wanganui, where lie was parading reguhrl'. The information was laid by the police, and there was no one to rcprejeat fie cadet company. Sergeant-Major M'Glade applied for an adjournment. The matter had •Tidently teen over'oikt.l *y the cad-it officials. His Worship, however, refused an adjournment and dismissed the information.

Leslie Samuel Duttoii, charged with a like offence, pleaded, guilty, hut stated that on the night in question he was working, and that was the reason he had missed this and other drillls. If the defence law were to be enforced, he would have to apply for exemption. Sergeant-Major , M'Glade complained that defendant had made no excuse until he was summoned. The Magistrate inflicted a fine of as, with costs 7s, and advised the defendant to apply for exemption.

SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT. Mr. Slaughter, Inspector of Awards, proceeded against Allen Veale for employing an assistant after 9 p.m. on a Saturday. Defendant pleaded guilty, but explained that on this occasion the assistant in question had not served his full time for the weeek, as he had been allowed 2'/ 2 -hours off, in order ?to hear the Royal Artillery Band. On the night in question the assistant had vol■atarily offered to assist o >*endant, wh j had a shop full of customers to attend to, and had remained for twenty-five minutes after hours.

The inspector stated that the law forbade the employment of an assistant after 9 p.m. on Saturday, on any pretext whatever. Defendant had beeen previously warned. The Magistrate said that while the law might press hardly in some cases, he could not alter it. Defendant was fined 10s, "and costs 7s.
